Metamaterials – Now they have it!

I have already written about Metamaterials and stated my sympathy for these fancy materials [here]. Metamaterial exhibit a negative refractory index, which is a rather uncommon feature and enables them to perform quite unusual characteristics.
So far, they only existed for microwave and infrared electromagnetic waves, mainly due to problems in fabrication of the corresponding structures and resonance losses. Now, the group of Xiang Zhang at University of California, Berkeley, realized this task and produced a material composed of nano-wires, that exhibited a negative refraction for all incident angles of the visible scale of electromagnetic waves Jie Yao et al. Science 15 August 2008.
This allows for a multitude of applications, and some of them, for example optical communication, would be much more beneficial than the scince-fiction-cloaking-device.
